Hessenlied

The Hessen song is the anthem of the German state of Hesse. It is one of the numerous popular in German-speaking regional anthems. The song is protected as an official state symbol by § 90a StGB. Thus it enjoys in contrast to other regional songs ( Badner Lied, Lower Saxony song etc. ) special protection against the disparagement of the state and its symbols.

Genesis

The Hessen song was written like most works of its kind in the Wilhelmine era. The melody for the song was composed by the Hesse from Besse ( Edermünde ) derived Kassel Music teacher Albrecht Brede ( 1834-1920 ). The accompanying text written by the famous poet 's lifetime quite Carl Preser ( 1828-1910 ).

The song heard at first only as one of many of the typical contemporary choral works patriotic embossing distribution, as in the Grand Duchy of Hesse already an official " Prince anthem" existed in the Electorate of Hesse and on official occasions the Prussian anthem had to be sung. The song gained only after the end of the monarchy and establishment of the People's State of Hesse in 1919, gradually the character of a semi- official anthem and was known by its inclusion in the school song books to a wider audience.

In the era of National Socialism, the carried by a serene, nature-related and defensive patriotism Hesse song came as a non -ideological conformity disuse. It was only in 1951, remembered the newly elected prime minister of Hesse - Georg August Zinn (SPD ) of the song and promoted the use of the piece as a Hessian anthem. Background was the extensive efforts of tin, the state of Hesse, which after 1945 was assembled artificially from several historically and socially very different regions developed to provide a common identity. Unlike many resulting in the same context ideas tin (eg the Hessentag ) the Hesse song at the population was of course never really popular. Also, a program begun in the 1950s, decades continued action of the Hessian State Office for Political Education, which distributed the note issue of Hesse song in large editions free of charge to schools and other institutions, could not change that.

In the repertoire of many choirs of Hesse Hesse the song can be found to this day.

Text

Special features of Hesse song is one of the fact that no single, generally accepted text version exists. So already circulating in the imperial period several different, sometimes regionally accented variants that lead all Preser as a writer, so that the reconstruction of the " original version " would appear difficult. In the official sheet music of the 1950s, sometimes a specifically modified version was circulated in which the religious elements were removed, but had an error in the rhyme scheme. The following text is the common version in choir editions variant without regional references.

1 I know a country so rich and so beautiful full of golden ears of corn in the fields. There green in the valley to sunny stately tread fragrant breathy, dark forests. There, I have a child at the mother's hand sitting in flowers and flowers. Greet God you, you home, you magnificent country. Greet God you, my dear country Hessen! 2 The castles towering heights my greeting, the woods in Morgenrotstrahle, the currents brazen foot cliffs wild rushing flow around the valley! Greet God, where I was once at the brook beach sitting in flowers and flowers. Greet God you, you home, you magnificent country, Heart of Germany, my thriving Hessen! 3 Your base which the abyss of the times gave birth, has stood firm in the storms and bravely defied the fate of danger if and're overcame already trembling himself. So we want to protect with a hammer and sword you treasure whose value can estimate no enemy that you angrily denied the peace: Your shield are we, strong country Hessen! 4 Mag our deadline verweh'n also in dreams and overthrow what we gave you, you will but seh'n the morning of eternity, Mother will be glorious life, proud because blazes in the heart of the grandson of the fire, the once uns're ancestors possessed: God greet you, home of bliss pledge: immortal fatherland Hessen!

From the Hessian state government subsequent version is released, having the mentioned error: the place of " Hesse " used word " Hessen " at the end of the last lines of both stanzas does not add up to the meter and rhymes not " sit " on, but it fits better to the melody.

1 I know a country so rich and so beautiful full of golden ears of corn in the fields. There green in the valley to sunny stately tread much dark, fragrant woods. There, I have a child at the mother's hand sitting in flowers and flowers. I greet you, you home, you magnificent country. Heart of Germany, Hesse my thriving country. 2 From the Main to the Weser, Werra and Lahn a country full of blooming meadows, there shine the cities that we saw all are gorgeous to look in the light. There I got as a child at the mother's hand sitting in flowers and flowers. I greet you, you home, you magnificent country. Heart of Germany, Hesse my thriving country.
