Hessian (cloth)

Hessian (English, [ hɛsɪən ] ) is a name in the textile industry for a jute backing, which is often referred to as burlap.

It is a rough and natural colored jute fabric in plain weave. If it is made or printed with pattern, it is referred to as picking. Hessian is used mainly for wall covering and upholstery and as a base or backing fabric for tufted carpets or linoleum. The material is also known as Hessian cloth. Simple clothes and lab coats were made in the past from Hessian.

In trade, the quality designation hessian bagging exists (HB ) and is listed with the additional indication of the square weight.
