Hexamethyldisiloxane is a chemical compound from the group of siloxanes.

Production and representation

Hexamethyldisiloxane formed upon contact of chlorotrimethylsilane with water, chlorotrimethylsilane first hydrolyzed in a violent exothermic reaction and formation of hydrogen chloride to trimethylsilanol, which is unstable and condenses under elimination of water to hexamethyldisiloxane.

Use

Hexamethyldisiloxane (as hexamethyldisilazane ) was used for the production of quartz-like layer of silicon dioxide by plasma or flame coating (for example PET bottles). It is also used as a non-polar solvent with low surface tension (for example, drugs), and the introduction of trimethylsilyl groups.

Safety

The vapors of hexamethyldisiloxane can form (-8 ° C, ignition temperature 310 ° C flash point) with air to form an explosive mixture.
