Hexamethylphosphoramide ( HMPT short ) is a solvent in organic chemistry. It is a colorless, unpleasant smelling, poisonous liquid and has the empirical formula C6H18N3OP. The excellent aprotic solvent dissolves both inorganic as well as organic compounds, many plastics and gases.

Use

In the series of DMF, DMSO, and HMPT HMPT is the best aprotic solvents. Therefore, it is used in the organic synthesis. The disadvantage, however, is that it is the substance is a particularly dangerous carcinogenic and mutagenic substance is ( in category 2). Therefore, the substance in Annex II No. 6 Hazardous Substances Ordinance shall not be produced or used in closed systems. Since HMPT triggered in already relatively low concentration with very high probability in rats cancer of the nasal mucosa, it was nicknamed liquid cancer ( " liquid cancer "). Because of this toxicity properties is attempted HMPT other solvent - in particular those mentioned above, the urea derivatives or dimethylpropyleneurea ( DMPU ) and 1,3- dimethyl-2- imidazolidinone (DMI) - replace.
