Hexamethyltungsten is a chemical compound of the tungsten from the group of organometallic compounds.
Production and representation
Hexamethyltungsten can be obtained by reaction of tungsten (VI ) chloride to trimethylaluminum.
The preparation by reaction of tungsten (VI ) chloride and methyl lithium can be, however, is unsatisfactory because of the difficult to control and reproducible reaction conditions.
Properties
Hexamethyltungsten is a dark red, very volatile, crystalline solid which begins to decompose slowly starting at -40 ° C, but below this temperature for long periods can be kept. Its solutions can survive without noticeable decomposition for several days at -25 ° C and are suitable even for a short time at room temperature.
