Hexanal is an organic compound belonging to the group of aldehydes and green leaf fragrances.

Occurrence

Hexanal is formed in nature when unsaturated fatty acids are degraded by oxidation. This aldehyde is noticeable, for example, if the grass is cut. The same occurs when an apple mash is made . Only with time, the hexanal is reduced to the odorless hexanol. Add apple juice, orange juice or olive oil, it is quite desirable in small quantities.

Use

Hexanal is found in many paints and linoleum as well as in medicines. Furthermore, it is also used in fragrance chemistry use.

Properties

Hexanal oxidizes easily and tends to polymerize in the presence of traces of acid.
