Hexham
Hexham is a city on the River Tyne in Northumberland, England. It has 11,139 inhabitants (as of 2001).
Etymology of the name
The name of Hexham is later emerged from the Anglo-Saxon Hagustaldes ea Hagustaldes ham. hagusteald means youth, warrior, acolyte and courtier; éa means water or river and -ham corresponds to the German home.
History
In 674 Wilfrid founded a monastery here. The current Hexham Abbey dates largely from the 11th century. In addition, you can visit the first English prison in the city, which was built as such.
