In the early 12th century, King Henry I to curtail the power of the prince-bishops of Durham decided by reduced their dominion. He rose Hexhamshire to a county, whose capital was Hexham.

Hexhamshire retained the status of a county until 1572, when his field of traditional county of Northumberland was assigned.

The term is occasionally used to Hexhamshire today for the territory of the municipalities Hexham, Allendale and St John Lee.
