Heybeliada

Heybeliada ( Halki Greek Χάλκη, also known as Demonisos ) is the second largest of the Princes' Islands in the Marmara Sea. Administratively part of the Heybeliada Istanbul's Princes' Islands.

The highest point of the island is 136 m of Değirmen Tepe. Other hills are Ocağı Tas Tepe (128 m), Ümit Tepe (85 m) and Makarios Tepe (98 m). Heybeliada has four ports ( Bahriye, Mendirek, Değirmenburnu and Çam ). The Çam port forms the largest port.

History

Heybeliada was until the beginning of the 19th century, a fishing island, but with the establishment of schools (First private Ottoman trade school, Ottoman naval academy ) and by the wealthy Greek community experienced the island appreciation. First mayor in 1887, the Greek Papa Yani. 1894, a major earthquake damaged the buildings on the island. After the founding of Turkey in 1923 a sanatorium for tuberculosis patients was established on Heybeliada. The Naval Academy was moved for safety reasons during the Second World War to Mersin and 1946 moved back again. Because of the pogrom against the Greek minority in Istanbul in September 1955, immigrated part of the island Greeks to Greece.

Structures

The island has some Greek Orthodox monuments. When Çam -harbor, Terki - Dunya Monastery is from 1868 There is also the Aya Yorgi - Uçurum monastery ( Agios Georgios - Saint George ). Of 1758 and the Virgin Mary Church, which in 1341 by Emperor John V has been built. On the northern tip of Ümit -Tepe (formerly Papaz -Tepe ) is a Greek Orthodox monastery from the 11th century, in which the Halki seminary housed. The Halki seminary was until 1971 the most important theological college of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople Opel. The school is closed today, attracting tourists from Greece and Turkey. On the grounds of the Naval Academy is the grave of the English ambassador Edward Barton, who was the second British Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire. Also on the grounds is the only surviving Byzantine church called Kamariotissa. Kamariotissa was the last church, which was built before the fall of Constantinople in 1453. The Turkish Navy has named the ship of the class MILGEM TCG Heybeliada to the island.

Traffic

In order not to pollute the air and the environment of Heybeliada, no motorized vehicles are allowed on the island. Exceptions are vehicles of ambulance, police, fire and similar vehicles. Modes of travel to the island on foot, by bicycle or horse-drawn carriage. Heybeliada has no airport, but only a seaport.

Population

In the winter of the population of the island about 5600, but increases in summer because of the owners of summer homes on approximately 10,000 to. Main summer attractions are the open-air concerts, swimming and fitness club on the sea and the annual procession of the Marine Band 's Independence Day.
