Sony was the only manufacturer of Hi-MD media, Hi- MD units were offered in Germany by Sony and Onkyo. In Japan, Onkyo continues to provide inpatient decks. Otherwise, no continuation of this format is currently planned.

Audio data is stored on the disc with data reduction in the " audio data compression format " ATRAC3 or the more recent ATRAC3Plus. Own recordings in PCM format are also possible. Thus, at a bit rate of 48 kbit / s up to 45 hours of music found on the storage media space. To connect through the possibility of (stereo ) microphones and manually auszusteuern the recordings provide Hi-MD Walkmans currently a viable and affordable solution for mobile audio recording in high quality dar.

Hi-MD devices can be connected to the PC. Besides the possibility to use mini discs than conventional removable disk (SonicStage, HiMDRenderer, QHiMDTransfer ) created recordings for further processing ( audio interface ) can be transferred to the computer using relevant software.

Hi- MD devices support the following bit rates:

In addition to the Hi-MD media and conventional discs can be formatted so that they are available in Hi -MD mode; they then have about 300 MB of memory. Hi -MDs or discs used in Hi -MD mode are recognized by the operating system as an external drive, so you can store any data on it. However, music has to be played by SonicStage, so that it is playable by the device.

The recording on conventional MDs without reformatting is only possible with the 1st and 3rd generation devices, the second generations MDs recorded only via a computer connection in NetMD mode.
