Hierophany

The concept of hierophany in the meaning of " to appear in the Holy profane " was, in his treatise on the history of religions created ( " Religions and the Sacred " ) by Mircea Eliade 1949. Eliade argued that so-called Holy phenomena go back to this place in antiquity evolutions of ( early Indo-European ) shamanism.

Eliade points out that the inauguration was equated in some mysteries with the techniques for achieving out of body experiences in shamanism. The hierophany was opposed by Eliade as a single phenomenon symbolism: "While including the hierophany discontinuity of the religious experience in itself ... means of symbolism, the permanent union of man with the saints. "

The term is derived from the word Hierophant.
