Hiesville

Hiesville is a commune with 71 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) on the Cotentin peninsula in the department of Manche in Basse-Normandie region. It belongs to the community association Sainte- Mère -Église.

Geography

Hiesville is on the Cotentin peninsula 8 km north of Carentan, is a commune of the Regional Natural Park Marais du Cotentin et du Bessin. The municipality covers 403 hectares, the average height is 20 meters above sea level, the Mairie stands at a height of 30 meters. The river Escalgrain flows through the community.

History

During World War II Hiesville was liberated on June 5, 1944 with no opposition from the 101st Airborne Division. Thereafter, the then General Maxwell D. Taylor his headquarters set up there.

Culture and sights

The church of Saint -Côme Saint- Damien, which is dedicated to Saints Cosmas and Damian, was built in the 13th century. The nave was rebuilt in the 19th century, however. The stained glass windows from the 16th century were used again in the 19th century, they are classified as a monument historique (historic monument).

The Protestant Cemetery Hiesville dates from the time of the Wars of Religion ( 1562-1598 ).

Economy

An important branch of industry in Hiesville is the breeding of domestic bovines, horses and poultry.
