High Fidelity (novel)

High Fidelity is a novel by Nick Hornby, who first appeared in 1995.

Action

The 35- year-old Robert Fleming lives in London Crouch End and is owner of a record store. He and his two employees Dick and Barry often discuss their respective top five records or their top five worst songs of all time.

Rob is right at the beginning of the novel by his girlfriend Laura, the lawyer is leaving because he cheated on her while she was pregnant. A larger amount of money that they had lent him, he could never repay her; also both found that their relationship was more boring.

Rob therefore reported as first-person narrator of his top five ex-girlfriends: Alison Ashworth, Penny Hardwick, Jackie Allen, Charlie Nicholson and Sarah Kendrew. He meets in the course of history in order with them again and they talk about their relationships and their lives, because Rob wants to find out what exactly their relationship went on the rocks.

Learn the singer Marie LaSalle, however, must still often think of Laura. This is meanwhile with Ian Ray, who has lived for some time on the home of Rob and Laura. However, Rob learns of Laura's best friend Liz that Laura in her new relationship is also not happy.

At the funeral of Laura's father Ken, the two get a little closer again. Laura notices that her life with Rob was better, however, he realizes that he needs to change his behavior in order to bring back Laura can. Laura organized a club appearance for Rob, with whom he hangs up as a DJ in earlier times. At the sold out Club Barry enters with his band Backbeat on also. Laura and Rob are finally back a couple, although Laura rejects his marriage proposal.

Reviews

The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung called 1996 High Fidelity in a review as a book " written knowledgeable in pop music terms " should, expresses concern that the novel for the reader than " the broad offer of identification [ ... ] offer little " could and that " the yield of this chatty book lean" round will be.

Filming

In 2000, the novel became a movie starring John Cusack in the lead role (see High Fidelity (film ) ).
