High Rhine

As the High Rhine is called the location between Lake Constance and Basel section of the Rhine. This chapter is followed largely the border between Switzerland and Germany. According to him, the Planning Region High Rhine Lake Constance in Baden- Württemberg is named.

General

The term high- Rhine was introduced by science until the 19th century. In particular, the geologists were anxious linguistically delineate the Upper Rhine from the Upper Rhine. Before that, there was talk of possibly " the Baden - Swiss Rhine ". The High Rhine begins at the outflow of the Rhine from the submarine of Lake Constance at Stein am Rhein and goes into the Upper Rhine at Basel on the Rhine knee. As more accurate boundary point between the sub-basins Rheinsee of Lower Lake and the Upper Rhine, the Rhine bridge stone is defined on the Rhine, as the endpoint the middle bridge is in Basel. Unlike the Alpine Rhine and Upper Rhine, High Rhine flows mainly to the west and thereby falls from 395 m to 252 m. The discharge rate increases from 364 m³ / s to 1037 m³ / s (for further information see: River system of the Rhine ). The valley is alternately notched wide -soled and narrow. Accordingly, different is the population density.

Larger tributaries of the Rhine are beavers, Thur, Töss Slippery Wutach, Aare, Alb, Murg, Sissle, Wehra, Ergolz and Birs. It is noteworthy that at the confluence of the Aare with 560 m³ / s water-rich than the slightly longer Rhine with 439 m³ / s From hydrological point of view therefore, the Rhine is a tributary of the River Aare.

Natural space

The Hochrheintal is part of the biogeographic main unit group No. 16 ( Upper Rhine area ) in the South-West German cuesta. He leads the No. 160 in the systematics of the manual nature of the spatial structure of Germany.

Waterfalls and rapids ( "Run " )

The relatively high slope and the cold seasonal run changes facilitated the formation of several major rapids ( "Run " ) on the Upper Rhine. First, the High Rhine forms in Neuhausen when hitting a previously spilled current trough the largest waterfall in continental Europe, the Rhine Falls ( Big Run, Upper Jurassic ). It follows above the Wutach Estuary at Ettikon the Ettikoner Lauffen, also called Koblenz Running ( Upper Muschelkalk ). When running the castle is a beautiful post eintiefende Rhine missed turn a previously zusedimentierte trough and met an offshoot of the Black Forest crystallin. In it he cut a close Laufenburger rapids, today blasted and accumulated little running. Also flooded the Schwörstadter running today.

Cities and landscapes

More famous cities on the High Rhine are Stein am Rhein, Schaffhausen, Neuhausen Rhine Falls, Waldshut -Tiengen, running Castle, Bad Säckingen, Rheinfelden and Basel.

In many chambered of the pelvis and lateral valleys Upper Rhine area, there are numerous current and historic landscape designations. From west to east these are Dinkelberg, Augstgau, Frick Valley, Tafeljura, Albgau, Aargau, Hotze forest, Zurzibiet, Unterklettgau, Zürichgau and Thurgau.

Uses and impacts

The character of the river landscape has been altered by the construction of hydroelectric power plants on long drives. Connected with the original aim of the navigable here also the great rapids were blown up in Laufenburg and flooded (see waterfalls in Germany ).

Between Diessenhofen and Stein am Rhein High Rhine flows still ungestaut. The first hydroelectric power plant of the Rhine at Schaffhausen has its reservoir head above Diessenhofen. 7 km to the Rhine Falls follows the diversion Rheinau. And its construction in the 1950s went ahead violent protests since the damming effect is visible to the Rhine Falls. In addition, the Rhine flows around the loop is Rheinau monastery only thanks to two auxiliary dams with water. The next power plants are in Eglisau - Glattfelden and Reckingen. Thereafter, the Rhine flows again ungestaut by the Koblenz running, then takes the Aare to the city and meets with body and Dogern to the next power plant ( Albbruck- Dogern ). From here to Basel follow a further seven power plants. Overall, the High Rhine is one of eleven dams with twelve hydroelectric power stations (two in the barrage Augst / Wyhlen ).

The most important organizations for cross-border cooperation on the Upper Rhine, the Upper Rhine Commission and the High Rhine agency.

Shipping

Typical of the Upper Rhine, the green - white -to-navigation, the so-called Wiffen. Mark the fairway. Ships with deeper draft vessels such as the price of the Swiss shipping company submarine and Rhine can drive solely on the green side. For safety are boats with shallow draft, such as Weidlinge or inflatables, required to drive on the white side.
