Highland Park distillery

The Highland Park Distillery is a whiskey distillery in Kirkwall on the Orkney Mainland, Scotland, United Kingdom. It is the northernmost distillery in Scotland. The distillery buildings are sorted in the Scottish lists of monuments in the B category.

History

The history of the northernmost distillery in Scotland began in 1798, when Magnus Eunson started on the grounds of the distillery black burn. Built in 1825 Robert Borwick today's distillery, which received its license in 1826. Until 1869 it remained the property of Borwicks, followed by several changes of ownership. 1890 acquired James Grant distillery and had them in 1898 from two to four stills expand. From 1918 to 1937, where it was acquired by the Highland Distillers Group, the distillery was decommissioned. From 1997 to 2005, the employee operated the Scapa Distillery, in compensation for this they were allowed to share the local warehouses.

In March 2006, the distillery cat Barley died in a car accident; the end of a 200 year old tradition, when a successor will not exist.

Production

The water belonging to the Highlands / Islands distillery comes from Cattie Maggie's Quarry, an old quarry, which is fed by an underground spring. The distillery is one of the few who still own in their own Tennenmälzerei ( floor Maltings ) malts. The malt is kilned in their own kilns for which peat is used from the nearby, covered with heather, Hobbister Moor. The malt has produced 20 ppm of phenol and is mixed with malt ungetorften of bought from the mainland. The distillery has a mash tun ( 11.4 t) of stainless steel fermenting vats twelve ( per 29,200 liters ) of wood, two wash stills ( per 14,600 liters ) and two spirit stills ( 8,500 l), which are heated by steam. 2010 -level and matured on the premises on the outskirts of Kirkwall 1.8 million gallons ( equivalent to approximately 80,000 hectoliters ) of whiskey.

Products

From the distillery there are a variety of fillings, of which the 12 -year-old and the 18 -year-old malt whiskey are the most widespread. All tastes slightly sweet with hints of heather, peat, sea air and honey.

The 12 -year-old Highland Park single malt Scotch was in 2008 with the BEST OF SHOW AWARD - WHISKY honored at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. The 21 -year-old Highland Park was awarded at the World Whisky Awards 2009 for " Best Single Malt of the Year".

Highland Park whiskey is offered in the following standard bottlings: 12 years, 15 years, 18 years, 25 years, 30 years and 40 years. There is also a series of special bottlings.

The limited edition Orcadian Vintage series was filled in only five vintages: 1964 (290 Fl. ), 1968 (1550 Fl. ), 1970 (1800 Fl. ), 1971 (657 Fl. ) And 1976 (893 Fl. ). Another limited series were the Earl Magnus Editions: Earl Magnus ( 5976 Fl. ), Saint Magnus and Earl Haakon (3300 Fl. ) ( 11994 Fl. ). Limited to 275 bottles of Highland Park 50 years is the oldest and £ 10,000 with the most expensive Highland Park whiskey. The bottle is designed by Maeve Gillies, are handcrafted and plated with 925 sterling silver.

Tourist information

The distillery is one of the most visited monuments in the Orkney Islands. Throughout the year there are several guided tours on weekdays, during the peak season and on weekends. In the summer months a prior reservation is necessary for it. For outstanding service and excellent tourist infrastructure Highland Park was awarded in 2009 an award from the Scottish Tourist Board. With the Orkney Islands Council is an advertising community, both partners have committed to make in the common interest for each of the other ads, therefore flew among others a propeller plane of Loganair for a year completely in black and white colors of the distillery.
