Highlands and Islands

In Scotland, Highlands and Islands denotes essentially the Highlands plus the island groups Orkney, Shetland and Hebrides.

Sometimes this area is defined as the scope of the Crofters ' Act of 1886, which included the seven counties of Scotland Argyll, Inverness- shire, Ross and Cromarty, Sutherland, Caithness, Orkney and Shetland.

Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE ) uses a broader definition, which is also used by Eurostat 's NUTS level 2. And it is also the name of an electoral region of the Scottish Parliament.
