Highway 1 (Australia)

The National Highway 1, often referred to simply as Highway 1, is a trunk road in Australia. The Highway 1 follows the course of the coast and circled the entire Australian continent. With approximately 14,500 square kilometers, it is the longest national road connecting the world. The Highway 1 connects the main cities Brisbane, Darwin, Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney. A separate section of Highway 1 there is also in Tasmania.

History

In Australia in 1955 was introduced in the national road numbering system. At this time, the highway was one of the only true National Highway. But this did not mean that the Highway 1 is the shortest distance between two places each. Many other highways at that time were no more than minor roads of Highway 1

Some roads that run parallel to Highway 1 were then called National Route Alternative 1, shown on road signs as ALT 1. This could be used as an alternative route without having it changed the general direction of travel or be my target.

In the 1990s, a new National Highway System was introduced in Australia. This new alphanumeric designations for roads were introduced. The streets are designated according to the importance with the letters A, B, C, D or M. This had the consequence that the name Highway 1 forfeited in importance and routes that were previously reported as Alternative 1, my numbers were given.

Today

Today, the Highway 1 is still an important component in the network of Australian highways. Since the introduction of the National Highway system in the 1990s and the gradual implementation in the various States of the Highway 1 is now posted mostly as A1 or M1. The initial signs of Highway 1 is, however, largely disappeared.

In the metropolitan areas of the larger cities of Highway 1 is very well developed and driven than four, sometimes six-lane road. In rural areas, the road is partially expanded worse, especially what concerns the technical infrastructure (eg gas stations or service areas ).
