Highways in Spain

In Spain there are two terms for "highway": Autovia and Autopista. The distinction has its origins in the 1980s when the Spanish road network should be modernized quickly with EU funding. Important national roads were expanded to four lanes and - to distinguish it from the few existing Autopistas - called Autovias. In the mid- 1990s, however, was gone over Autovias also to build parallel to the existing national roads.

Since the difference of the renumbering of the road network in 2003 is principally that Autopistas are privately built and privately operated highways, while Autovias be built and maintained by a public carrier.

Autopistas are better developed in the rule: you have larger curve radii, elaborate designed entrances and exits and lower slopes. You are expanded without crossing in each case, while autovías sometimes end in traffic lights (now very rare). In addition autovías are always free, Autopistas occur mainly toll roads. The numbering of autovías, provided it is maintained by the state, starts with A,. Autopistas of AP, although there are exceptions to this rule In addition, there are a variety of autovías in provincial or regional sponsorship, which can then have different names. In the listing is no distinction between the two terms. In general, the number of autovías clearly predominates.

To make it even more complicated: Change Normally AP ( Autopista ) and A ( Expressway ) - sections from each other. For example, the A-1 Madrid- San Sebastian -Madrid is mainly toll free, in parts but it is also a toll road as AP -1.

But there are also sections where A and AP run in parallel, for example, AP-2 and A-2 between Lleida and Barcelona

Regional highways

In addition, the individual regions (Autonomous Communities ) partly entertain even highways. This includes most of ring roads in the urban centers. This part of highway-like -maintained roads are marked with abbreviations of the respective State / Autonomous Community or their capital. Examples of these regional highways:
