Hildebert and Everwin

Hildebert and EVERWIN (also Hildebert and Everwinus; * probably in the Rhineland ) were two book artist who worked in Moravia in the 12th century.

Sphere of activity

The monk and the book painter Hildebert and its assistant EVERWIN were appointed by the Olomouc Bishop Henry Zdík to Olomouc. It is possible that he had met her 1137/1138 on his pilgrimage to Palestine. In Olomouc they created precious book illustrations of manuscripts. Two of them illustrated works are among the oldest Bohemian manuscripts for Hildebert and EVERWIN 1925 could be detected by art historian Antonín Friedl as Creator:

  • The Horologium Olomucense is a liturgical collection, which is also called the Breviary or Liturgy of the Hours. It was created beginning of 1140 years for the Olomouc chapter at the newly built St. Wenceslas Cathedral. In the Thirty Years' War it was looted by the Swedes and is now in the Royal Library of Stockholm. The dedication image contained therein is, in the opinion Antonín Friedls the inauguration of the Olomouc St. Wenceslas Cathedral on June 30 1131st
  • Also on behalf of the Bishop Zdík the written in the 5th century treatise De Civitate Dei of Augustine was written off in Olomouc scriptorium and illustrated by Hildebert and EVERWIN. It was given by Bishop Zdík the Strahov Monastery and is now under the signature XXI A in the library of the cathedral chapter Prague. One of the illustrations in this work shows a self-portrait of the Master Hildebert in monk's robes, as he chased a mouse while Everwinus ornaments paints on the open book to be read: " Pessime mus, saepius me provocas ad iram. Ut te deus perdat " (you nasty mouse, many times you have provoked me to anger. God will destroy you ) ..

In his art historical evaluation Antonín Friedl pointed in 1925 both codices the perimeter of the Salzburg school, while the art historian Arnold Boeckler 1953, a membership proved to the perimeter of the Cologne School.
