Hilton Head Iceland is a city on the eponymous island in Beaufort County in the U.S. state of South Carolina. It lies about 32 km north of Savannah, Georgia and 153 kilometers south of Charleston, South Carolina. The city's name is often abbreviated to Hilton Head. At the last census in 2010 the population was 37 099. Hilton Head Iceland is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the United States, so the population can increase to up to 275,000 in the summer months.

The History of Hilton Head can be traced due to archaeological finds to about 10,000 years. In 1521 the island was explored for the first time by European explorers. The history of the municipality of Hilton Head Iceland, however, dates back only to 1983, the date of incorporation.

On one of the golf courses on the island, the Verizon Heritage tournament since 1969, performed one of the venues of the PGA Tour.

Demography

According to the census of 2000, there were 33,862 people in 14,408 households and 9,898 families. The population density was 311 per km ². There 24,647 housing units were recorded. The racial the population was composed of 85.33 % White, 8.26 % African American, 0.14 % Native American, 0.55 % Asian, 0.02 % Pacific Islander residents from the and 4.48 % from other ethnic groups; 1.21 % said the lineage of several ethnicities. 11.48 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 14,408 households out of which 20.9 % have children living with them. 59.6 % were married couples living together, 6.2 % had a female householder with no husband, and 31.3 % were non-families. 23.8 % of all households are made up and 11.3% had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.32 and the average family size 2.68 persons.

The population was spread out with 17.3% under the age of 18, 6.9 % from 18 to 24, 24.5% 25-44 years, 27.3 % from 45 to 64 years and 24.1 % of 65 years or older. The average age (median) was 46 years. For every 100 females there were 100.2 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 99.0 males.

The median income for a household (median) was $ 60 438, and the median income for a family $ 71,211. Males have a median income of $ 37,262, women $ 30,271. The per capita income was $ 36,621. Under the poverty line 4.7 % of families and 7.3 % of the population, including 9.4% under 18 years and 2.7 % aged 65 years or older lived.
