Himalayan marmot

Himalayan marmot ( Marmota himalayana )

The Himalayan marmot ( Marmota himalayana ) is a species of the family of squirrels. It is regarded as so far only very little studied. The distribution area of the Himalayan marmot comprises despite its name, not only the Himalayas. You can observe this rather from nepal Saxon Himalayas and the Kuenlun to the eastern Nanschan and the mountains of the province Sikang.

The Himalayan marmot is one of the largest and heaviest species within the genus of marmots. Individual animals can be up to 70 centimeters long and weigh sometimes up to nine kilograms. The Menzbier marmot, the smallest of the marmots, on the other hand only 40 to 45 inches tall and weighs an average of 2.5 kilograms.

Within the marmots is probably the steppe marmot one of the next of kin. It has sometimes been classified in the past decades, even as a subspecies of it.
