Hindelbank

Hindelbank is a municipality in the administrative district of Emmental in the canton of Bern in Switzerland.

Geography

Hindelbank is located at 519 m above sea level. M., 6 km west of Burgdorf and 12 km northeast of the capital of the canton of Bern ( straight line ). The long-drawn street village is located in a gently undulating landscape on the southern edge of the flood plain of the river Emme, at the foot of the tertiary sandstone of the higher Swiss plateau.

The area of ​​6.7 km ² large municipality area includes a section of the Bernese Mittelland. The relief was shaped during the ice age by the Rhone glacier; it is slightly wavy and filled with moraine. The northern boundary runs along a short stretch along the canalized Urtenen, otherwise the area to the west and north ( Rail 2000 ) is by the traffic network of the A1 motorway and new stretch of the railway line Bern- Olten limited.

From here, the communal land extends to the southeast over a gently rising slope in the Chräiholz ​​and on the plateau of the moss. With 2166 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Hindelbank belongs to the medium-sized municipalities in the canton of Bern. Of the residents 92.9 % are German, 1.2 % French-speaking and 0.9 % speak Portuguese (as of 2000). The population of Hindelbank amounted in 1850 to 651 inhabitants, 1900 to 1006 inhabitants. During the 20th century, the population increased slightly to 1221 up to 1960 people. Since then, a significant population increase was recorded.

Economy

Hindelbank was up to the beginning of the 20th century, mainly stamped by agriculture village. The gradual industrialization began in 1888 with the establishment of a yeast factory; after came a biscuit factory and a laundry to do so.

Even today, the farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding have an important place in the economic structure of the population. Many other jobs are in the local retail industry and the services available. In addition to the plants already mentioned, small and medium enterprises in the construction industry, the textile industry, mechanical engineering, the transport industry, mechanical workshops and a gravel and concrete are represented in Hindelbank. Hindelbank is the site of a secondary school. In recent decades, the village has developed into a residential community. Larger residential areas have been built mainly on the eastern edge of the village. Many workers are therefore commuters who work mainly in the region of Burgdorf and in the agglomeration of Bern.

On the grounds of the castle Hindelbank is the only prison for women in German-speaking Switzerland.

Traffic

The community is conveniently moderately well developed. It lies on the main road from Bern to Zurich 1, from which branches connect to Burgdorf here. The nearest links to the A1 ( Bern- Zurich ) is located about 5 km from the center. On 16 June 1857, the railway line from Herzogenbuchsee to Bern was taken with a station in Hindelbank in operation. History

Some ruins west of Hindelbank indicate a settlement of the municipal area during the Roman period. The first written mention of the village was carried out in 1261 under the name Hindelwanch. Later, the names Hundelwanc ( 1275 ) published, Hundilwanch ( 1295), Hundelwang ( 1328 ) and Hindelbank ( 1401 ). The place name probably derives from the Old High German words wang ( meadow) and hintila ( doe ) and accordingly is meadow where deer graze. This interpretation of the name served as the basis for the design of municipal coat of arms. Other sources indicate the name as a meadow of Hundilo.

Since the Middle Ages Hindelbank formed its own government under the suzerainty of the Counts of Kyburg. The first of the Berne family coin belonging rule learned since 1363 numerous changes of ownership before they came into the possession of Hieronymus von Erlach in 1721. At the same time, the rule Bäriswil was incorporated into that of Hindelbank. In 1406 Hindelbank came under the suzerainty of Bern and the district court Zollikofen was assigned.

After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798 ), the village belonged to the district during the Helvetic Burgdorf and from 1803 to Oberamt hamlet, was given the status of an office district with the new cantonal constitution of 1831. From 1839 to 1918 was in Hindelbank the state teachers and teachers working seminar.

Attractions

The Reformed Church of Hindelbank goes back in essence to the early 16th century. After a fire in the house of God 1911-12 by Karl Indermühle it was extensively rebuilt.
