Hinge joint

The hinge joint (Latin ginglymus or articulation ginglymus ) of gr ginglymos " hinge " ) refers to a form of variant anatomy of a real joint. It consists of a cylindrical rod end, which rests in a pincer-like groove-like joint pan that corresponds to the segment of a hollow cylinder. It is usually additionally stabilized by tight side bands and may additionally include bony guide combs or troughs in the hyaline articular cartilage.

Due to the highly restricted by bony formations mobility hinge joint has only one axis of movement and a degree of freedom and allows for easy flexion (flexion ) and extension movements (extension).

Typical examples are:

  • Articulatio humeroulnaris: joint between the upper arm bone (humerus ) and Elle ( ulna ), a part of the elbow joint, articulatio cubiti
  • Articulationes interphalangiales manus: Finger Joints: Central and knuckles
  • Articulatio talocruralis: ankle
