Hipólito Mejía

Rafael Hipólito Mejía Domínguez [ rafaɛl ipo ː ː a lito mexi domiŋges ] ( born February 22, 1941 in Gurabo ) from 2000 to 2004, President of the Dominican Republic.

Hipólito Mejía studied in San Cristóbal agricultural science at the Instituto Politécnico Loyola. In 1962 he graduated from there his studies. Two years later he moved to the North Carolina State University in the United States, where he continued his studies of agriculture and complemented by a business focus. He was also an entrepreneur. He was elected in 2000 as the candidate of the Social Democratic Revolution Party ( PRD) and began his term on 16 August 2000.

During the tenure Mejía, the Dominican Republic experienced one of the worst economic crises in the country's history. This was facilitated by the failed economic policies of the government Mejía. In this period, for example, falls the collapse of the then nation's second largest private bank Baninter. The collapse of the bank was, among other things by a corruption scandal, in which the government was involved in public. One consequence of this crisis was a massive devaluation of the Dominican peso and a galloping inflation of up to 42%. Multiple Hipólito Mejía was accused of corruption, but it was a process in this regard never made.

Hipólito Mejía gained worldwide acquaintance by frequent verbal attacks. These often were directed against journalists. So he called, for example, a dark-skinned cameraman for an interview as a " little monkey ".

For the presidential elections 20 May 2012 Mejía candidate again. The short slogan of his campaign is " Llegó Papá " ( Papa has arrived ).
