Hiram Abrams

Hiram Abrams ( born February 22, 1878 in Portland, Maine, United States, † November 15, 1926 in Manhattan, New York City, New York, United States) was the first President of the United Artists film distribution company.

Life

Before his time at the United Artists Abrams himself was co-owner of a film distribution company. After the founding of the new film distribution company on May 19, 1919, the actress Mary Pickford, her husband and colleagues Douglas Fairbanks sen., The director David Griffith and the comedian Charlie Chaplin Abrams was appointed the first president. In the first years of the Film Distribution United Artists, and thus also their Jewish President had to contend with high fixed costs for the provision of a film distribution company and a few movies that could be delivered by them to the cinema. This is due to the pre-existing contracts of the founding members. Although all new cinematic products from now on should go on the United Artists at the cinema theater, only had to be met the previous commitments.

Only Abrams successor Joseph Schenck it to end this dilemma and the United Artists to establish itself as one of the three small U.S. film distributors succeed.
