Hit by Pitch

Hit by Pitch (HBP ) is a technical term from baseball. A hit by pitch is present when the pitcher hits the batter with the ball at his body.

Statistics

In baseball statistics, the abbreviation ' HBP ' means the sum of all litters in which a batsman was hit by a ball. In statistics, the pitcher, however, emerged the abbreviation "HB" ( hit batsman ), which indicates how often the pitcher has hit a batsman.

In statistics, the batsman when he was hit, not at bat counted, but an RBI (run batted in ) it is awarded, if at the time of the "hit by pitch " all the bases are covered.

Conditions for a Hit by Pitch

The four conditions, so that the throw is awarded a hit by pitch are:

  • The batsman or his equipment (except for the baseball bat ) are hit by the ball.
  • The results must be performed outside the strike zone.
  • The batsman may not have swung the bat at the ball.
  • The batsman must have tried to evade the throw, or he had no chance opinion of the referee, to avoid the litter.

Follow the Hit by Pitch

Whenever the batsman is hit by pitched ball, the ball is "dead".

The batsman is through the HBP automatically baserunner and can hit without going to the first base.

If the batsman swung his bat, the pitch is rated as Strike.

If the batsman does not attempt to avoid the pitch, the throw will be considered only as a ball for the batsman.

Tactical use of the Hit by Pitch

The so-called "inside pitching " is a legal and commonly sighted tactic in baseball. The pitcher throws attempted by close to your body or close under the chin of the striking man, this as far away from home plate.

Despite all this, the deliberate throwing is prohibited on a batsman and can also be very dangerous. If the umpire considers that the hit by pitch was intentional, as a warning to the pitcher and the manager of both teams is pronounced. From this point on each re- Hit by Pitch can lead to an immediate reference for game pitcher and manager. A so-called " beanball " a throw directly to the head of the percussion man, also can lead to immediate game reference without warning for the pitcher and pull a longer ban.

Some pitcher throwing with intent to the batsman when this unsportsmanlike or behave rudely, or if it has a particularly good day. Of course, try the pitcher to make it look as if the throw is advised them accidentally out of control. Often, the team of the impact man retaliates by the fact that the pitcher of the team also meets a batsman of the opponent. Such "games" but now and get out of control, so that there is about a Charging the Mound or the like, which usually leads to many game references.

Such duels and " revenge" attacks come in the Major Leagues significantly more common in the National League than in the American League before, as the pitcher for the National League itself also must start as a batsman, which is not the case in the American League. Thereby, the pitcher who threw the deliberate Hit by Pitch, an ideal destination for a rematch. The deliberate Hit by Pitch on an opposing pitcher is considered a breach of baseball etiquette.
