The Hite Crossing Bridge is an arch bridge northwest of Blanding in the southeast of the state of Utah in the United States. She leads the Utah State Route 95 over the Colorado River and is the unofficial border between Lake Powell and the Cataract Canyon, through which the Colorado River flows into Lake Powell. Depending on water levels, the lake is up to 30 miles ( 48 km) in the Cataract Canyon stretches into it.
The Hite Crossing Bridge is the only road bridge over the Colorado River between the 185 miles (298 km) away, Glen Canyon Bridge and the downstream Glen Canyon Dam and the 110 miles (180 km) upstream bridge on U.S. Route 191 at Moab. The bridge is near Hite Marina at Lake Powell. On the north side, behind the bridge is the " Hite Airport ", a small airfield and the mouth of the Dirty Devil River.
History
The Colorado River was a major obstacle to the early settlers and explorers of this region. 1880, addressed the prospector Cass Hite a ford near the mouth of the Dirty Devil River, about 2 miles ( 3.2 km ) downstream from the bridge today a. This ford, called "Dandy Crossing", was one of the few places in the region, where travelers could cross the Colorado River. The settlement, which was formed at the crossing, was named after the name of its founder Hite.
1946 built a settler named Arthur Chaffin on the basis of an old car engine and thick steel cable, a car ferry. She was 20 years in operation until the lake settlement Hite flooded.
The bridge was built as part of the realignment of State Route 95, whose construction was approved in 1962. This happened in the wake of the completion of Glen Canyon Dam, which impounds Lake Powell and its flood flooded the original road river crossing at Hite. In the tender for the bridge design by David Sargent on June 29, 1963, the surcharge over 3 million U.S. dollars building costs. It was opened on 3 June 1966.
