Hiyama Subprefecture

Hiyama (Japanese桧 山 振兴 局, Hiyama - Shinko - kyoku ) is a sub-prefecture of Hokkaido Prefecture. It has an area of ​​2630 km ² and a population of 48 138 (as of 31 August 2005).

Geography

The sub-prefecture Hiyama covers the western part of the Oshima peninsula - the eastern part belongs to the sub-prefecture Oshima - and the island of Okushiri.

History

The sub-prefecture was established on 1897 as Hiyama shicho (桧 山 支 庁}). In the reorganization of Hokkaidō April 1, 2010 it was renamed kyoku Hiyama - Shinko - in, as well as the administrative subordination to the sub-prefecture Oshima.

In Hiyama there are no large cities (市shi ). The seat of the prefectural government is located in Esashi.

Reclassifications

  • On 1 September 2005, the city Taisei district Kudō and the cities Setana and Kitahiyama merged to form the new town in the district of Setana Kudō district Setana.
  • On 1 October 2005, joined the city in the district of Nishi Kumaishi and the city Yakumo in the district of Yamakoshi in the sub-prefecture Oshima to the new city Yakumo also in the newly created district Futami together. The urban area of ​​Kumaishi was thereby added to the sub-prefecture Oshima.
