Hjalmar Carl Nygaard

Hjalmar Carl Nygaard (* March 24, 1906 in Sharon, Steele County, North Dakota; † July 18, 1963 in Washington DC ) was an American politician. Between 1961 and 1963 he represented the second electoral district of the State of North Dakota in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Early years

Hjalmar Nygaard attended the public schools of his home, the Maryville State Teacher College and the University of North Dakota. Between 1932 and 1935 he worked in his home as a teacher. From 1936 to 1944 he worked in Sharon in the food trade. Thereafter he was engaged until 1960 in Enderlin the hardware trade.

Political career

Nygaard was a member of the Republican Party. In Sharon he was mayor and member of the Board of Education. Between 1949 and 1960 he was a deputy in the House of Representatives from North Dakota. In 1959 he was president of the house and served temporarily as head of the Republican faction. In the congressional elections of 1960, Nygaard was selected for the second election district of his home state in the U.S. House of Representatives. There he broke on January 3, 1961 from Quentin N. Burdick. In the elections of 1962 he exchanged with Don L. Short constituency: Nygaard was elected in the first district in Congress, a mandate that previously held short.
