Hjalmar Gullberg

Hjalmar Gullberg ( pronunciation: [ ˌ ʝal ː ː maʁ gɵl bæʁʝ ] * May 30, 1898 in Malmo, † July 19, 1961 at Svedala ) was a Swedish poet.

Life

Hjalmar Gullberg was born out of wedlock and raised by adoptive parents, which always remained a trauma for him. While studying at the University of Lund, he was editor of the prestigious student newspaper Lundagård and contributed significantly to their former bloom. He was from 1936 to 1950 Chief of Swedish Radioteatern ( "Radio Theater" ) and in 1940 a member of the Swedish Academy. In 1944 he was appointed by Lund University Honorary Doctor of Philosophy. Severely ill with cancer, Hjalmar Gullberg took his own life to an end.

Importance

Hjalmar Gullberg is considered one of the most important Swedish poet. His work forms the transition from traditional to modern poetry. His often artful poems are of great expressiveness and almost musical eloquence. Hjalmar Gullberg often drew on biblical and ancient motifs, but also edited and present current related topics. He paid homage to demonstratively during the Second World War, the German-occupied Denmark and the liberal intellectual tradition. Hjalmar Gullbergs poems often deal with philosophical questions and deal with the position of the individual in the world between faith in God and loneliness.
