Hjelmeland is a commune in the Norwegian Rogaland.

Location

The municipality is part of the landscape Ryfylke. The Hjelmeland commune is bordered to the north by Suldal, to the east by Bykle, to the south and Forsand beach and to the west by Finnøy. The administrative center is located in Hjelmelandsvågen.

History

The largest towns are Fister and Årdal. The two former municipalities were united in 1965 in the municipality Hjelmeland. In Årdal is a 17th-century Renaissance church Årdal Old Church.

Economy

The main economic activities are fishing and fruit production.
