Hlohovec

Hlohovec ( until 1927 slovak also " Frašták "; German Freistad [ l], rarely also Freistadt at the Waag, Hungarian Galgóc ) is the largest city of the district in the west of Slovakia in the lower Považie, left the river on the southern and western edge of the Inowetz Mountains located.

History

The city was mentioned for the first time in 1113 as Golguz / Golgoc, the place already in the Neolithic period, during the time of the Quadi and the Great Moravian Empire was populated in this field. In 1365 there were in addition to the already existing Slovak settlement establishing a German city that was built around a trapezoidal marketplace as central plant. During the Turkish wars, the city had often to suffer from the fighting.

Attractions

  • Michael Church: Catholic Church from the Gothic period, was mentioned in 1242 and rebuilt several times in the following years.
  • Anne's Chapel: built on a polygonal plan next to St. Michael's Church chapel in 1748; it is the burial place of the Erdődy family who greatly influenced the city in the development
  • Castle: the three -leaf plant with irregular quadrangular courtyard is the dominant feature in the town; it was built in the 18th century instead of destroyed by the Turks, and only partly rebuilt castle is now home to a boarding school

Others

Administratively, there Hlohovec from the city proper and the eingemeindeten place Šulekovo located on the right Waagseite and was incorporated in 1980. The place Svaty Peter pri Váhu ( German Saint Peter ), which lay north of the city, was incorporated in 1953 and is now officially the city proper.

1920, the city was given the official name Hlohovec, which actually means hazel thorn or hawthorn.
