HMNB Clyde

Faslane -on- Clyde is a base of the Royal Navy in the Firth of Clyde in Scotland. Together with the nearby naval base Coulport is the official name of Her Majesty's Naval Base Clyde, or shortly HMNB Clyde.

Base

In Faslane the four British SSBN Vanguard Class are stationed. The atomic long-range missiles of the type Trident D5 with which the U- boats have to be stored in the neighboring Coulport. In addition to these submarines, the SSN of the Swiftsure class are stationed at Faslane. The SSN Trafalgar Class are not stationed here, however, the base run regularly for maintenance and repair work. In the future, the new SSN Astute Class will be based in Faslane. In addition to British and American and French nuclear submarines run the base at regular intervals. In 2003 a new dock system was put into operation at Faslane, which is to simplify the maintenance and repair of submarines significantly. By 2008, moreover, a new pier is built, which is designed for the new nuclear submarines of the Astute class and can accommodate six of them. A total of 3000 military and 4000 civilian employees working on the base.

Furthermore, in Faslane the NSRs (NATO Submarine Rescue Service ) stationed, which is operated by Britain, France and Norway as tri-national project. The Fleet Protection Group Royal Marines is based in Faslane. It is responsible for securing facilities and ships of the Royal Navy.

Protests

South of the base there since June 12, 1982, a permanent peace camp called Faslane Peace Camp. Since the 1990 protests, the organization Trident Ploughshares at Faslane nuclear disarmament in Britain. It found, inter alia, several large blocks instead. The biggest took place ahead of the G8 summit in Gleneagles on July 4, 2005. While previous blockades were each cleared by the police, all land based inputs were blocked during an entire day at the G8 blockade for the first time. Since February 2008, will take place on Northgate nuclear weapons base every Wednesday held a vigil. On June 14, 2008, hundreds of protesters formed a " peace chain " for the 40th anniversary of the deployment of nuclear missiles.

Faslane 365

From 1 October 2006 to October 1, 2007 the annual protest at Faslane 365 took place. As the first day of the protest the anniversary of the verdict of the Nuremberg trials was selected. Faslane 365 was based, as well as previous protests by Trident Ploughshares, an advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice of 8 July 1996, according to the contrary, the threat or use of nuclear weapons under international law. At the protest was attended by 131 groups. There have been arrested over 1,200 people and seized a Greenpeace ship that tried to penetrate into the base.
