HMS Adventure (1771)

HMS Adventure was a barque of the Royal Navy. She was one of the two ships, with which James Cook undertook his second expedition (1772-1775) and was under the command of Tobias Furneaux. She was the first ship that circumnavigated the earth from west to east.

She was 39.7 m long and was placed in Whitby as the Marquis of Rockingham 1771 in service. A short time later it was acquired by the Navy and initially was named Rayleigh, then Adventure.

Resolution and Adventure left Plymouth on 13 July 1772 crossed on January 17, 1773 the Tropic of Capricorn. On 8 February 1773 ships were separated in a fog. Tobias Furneaux explored on the way to the agreed meeting point in Queen Charlotte Sound, the Coast of Tasmania. The Adventure arrived at the meeting place on May 7, 1773, the resolution on May 17.

After exploring the Pacific on 22 October the ships lost again another contact. You missed at the meeting point. Furneaux decided to return home. The journey lasted until 14 July 1774th

In 1780 it was used as a beacon ship, 1783 sold back to their former owners in Whitby and used as a cargo ship. It ended 1811 as wreck in the St. Lawrence River.
