HMS Alert

Ten ships of the British Royal Navy have been named HMS Alert.

  • The first HMS Alert was a cutter with 10 cannons, which was launched in 1777 and was commissioned in 1778 by the French frigate Junon.
  • The second HMS Alert was a brigantine of 14 guns, which ran from 1779 batch and whose whereabouts can not be ascertained.
  • The third HMS Alert was a sloop which was launched in 1793 and was commissioned in 1794 by the French frigate Unité.
  • The fourth HMS Alert was originally the trading vessel Oxford. It was acquired in 1804 by the Royal Navy and converted to a sloop with 18 guns. It was taken in 1812 by the American frigate USS Essex.
  • The fifth HMS Alert was a sloop with 18 guns, which was launched in 1813 and was sold in 1832.
  • The sixth HMS Alert was a brigantine of 10 guns, which ran in 1833 from the stack and whose whereabouts can not be ascertained.
  • The seventh HMS Alert was a sloop with screw drive, which was launched in 1857, two British polar expeditions ( including George Nares extremely successful expedition in the Canadian- Arctic Archipelago, which culminated in the first passage of the Nares Strait ) took part, in 1884 the United States for a search expedition was made available and from 1885 was used in the Canadian coast Guard. It was auctioned in 1895 for breaking up. After ship the northernmost permanently inhabited settlement on earth, is Alert on Ellesmere Island, named.
  • The eighth HMS Alert was a sloop which was launched in 1894 and was sold in 1926,
  • The ninth HMS Alert was a frigate, under the name HMS Dundrum Bay launched in 1945. In 1946 she was converted into a courier ship and renamed HMS Alert. She was scrapped in 1971.
  • The tenth HMS Alert was a fleet tender, under the name of HMS Loyal Governor ( A510 ) was launched in 1968 for the Royal Naval Auxiliary Service from the stack and taken over in 1974 by the Royal Navy and renamed HMS Alert. In 1986 she went as Lydford ( A251 ) over to the Royal Maritime Auxiliary Service and was sold in 1996 in private ownership.
