HMS Boadicea

Several ships of the British Royal Navy have been named HMS Boadicea by an obsolete spelling of the name of Boudicca, a queen and Britannic army leader who ( 60-61 AD), led the Boudicca revolt against the Roman Empire.

  • The first HMS Boadicea (1797 ) was a frigate with ( nominally ) 38 guns, which was launched in 1797, took part in the Napoleonic wars and was scrapped in 1858.
  • The second HMS Boadicea was a corvette Bacchante class with 16 cannons, iron hull and screw drive, which was launched in 1875, including was used to combat the slave trade and in 1905 sold for demolition.
  • The third HMS Boadicea was a light cruiser with 3,300 ts, which was launched in 1908 at the Battle of Jutland (1916 ) took part in 1917 converted into a minelayer in 1926 and sold for scrapping.
  • The fourth HMS Boadicea ( H65 ) was a destroyer of the B-Class, which was launched in 1930 and was sunk by a German air raid near the Isle of Portland on June 13, 1944, with 174 crew members died. There were only 12 survivors.
