HMS Dragon

HMS Dragon was the name of several ships of the Royal Navy, derived from the English word for dragon ( mythology):

  • The first Dragon was a frigate of the fourth class with 38 cannons from the stack ran in 1647, was rebuilt in 1690 and 1707 and went in 1711 lost by stranding.
  • The second dragon, a 50 -gun ship of the line, went under the name HMS Ormonde from the stack, in 1715 renamed HMS Dragon and scrapped in 1733.
  • The third Dragon was a ship of the line with 60 guns, was launched in 1736 and was sunk as a breakwater in 1757.
  • The fourth dragon, a 74- gun ship Bellona - class, was launched in 1760 and was sold in 1784.
  • The fifth HMS Dragon was another two-decker 74-gun, the 1798 to 1815 was in service, renamed HMS Fame in 1842, used as an accommodation ship, and was scrapped in 1850.
  • The sixth HMS Dragon was a screw sloop of 6 guns, which was launched in 1878 and was sold in 1892.
  • The seventh HMS Dragon, a torpedo boat destroyer of the Banshee - class, ran 1894 off the stack and was sold in 1912.
  • The eighth HMS Dragon ( D46 ) was a light cruiser Danae class of service provided in 1918, delivered in 1943 to the Polish Navy and, in 1944, after torpedoing by a negro in front of the Mulberry Harbour sunk as a breakwater.
  • The ninth HMS Dragon ( D35 ) is a overflowed from the stack in November 2008, the destroyer Daring class, which was put into service on 20 April 2012.
