HMS Eagle

HMS Eagle was the name of eighteen ships in the history of the Royal Navy, named after the English word for eagle:

  • The first HMS Eagle was a merchant ship, which was purchased in 1592 and used as the Hulk until it was sold in 1683.
  • The second HMS Eagle was the French pinch Aigle, a ship with 12 guns, which was captured in 1650 and sold again in 1655.
  • The third HMS Eagle was the 1660 renamed HMS Selby with 22 cannons, which has been used since 1674 as Brander and 1694 sank after running aground.
  • The fourth HMS Eagle was a Brander with 6 guns, who went in 1670 captured by the Barbary States, and in 1671 lost in action.

  • The eleventh HMS Eagle, a two-decker with 64 guns, was launched in 1774, 1776 was the first ship ever of a submarine, the Turtle, attacked, renamed in 1800 in HMS Buckingham and scrapped in 1812.
