HMS Jackal

HMS Jackal is the name of several British ships, which are named after the wild dog jackal:

  • HMS Jersey (1778 ), a cutter with 10 cannons, which was purchased in 1778 and sold again in 1785.
  • HMS Jackal (1779 ), a cutter of 14 guns, which was later handed over by his mutinous crew on the French in the year. After the recapture in 1781 it was captured in 1782 by the American frigate USS Deane.
  • HMS Jackal (1792 ), a brig of 10 guns, which did service in 1792.
  • HMS Jackal (1801 ), a brig of 12 guns, which launched in 1801 and was captured in 1807 by the French.
  • HMS Jackal (1844 ), an iron gunboat with a paddle wheel, which was launched in 1844 and was sold in 1887.
  • HMS Jackal (1885 ), a fishery protection vessel, which was purchased in 1885 as HMS Woodcock. 1886, was renamed HMS Jackal and sold in 1906.
  • HMS Jackal (1911 ), a destroyer of Acheron class, which was placed in service in 1911 and sold in 1920.
  • HMS Jackal ( F22 ), a destroyer of the J- Class, which was launched in 1938 and sunk in 1942.
