HMS Janus

HMS Janus is the name of several British ships, which are named after Janus, the two-faced Roman god:

  • HMS Janus ( 1778), a ship of the 5th grade with 44 cannons, which was launched in 1778 and was renamed later in the year in HMS Dromedary. In 1780 it ran on the Rocks at Parasol Trinidad and sank.
  • HMS Janus (1796 ), a warship 5th grade with 32 cannons. In the Netherlands, built as Argo, she was captured in 1796 by HMS Phoenix, used from 1798 in the port service and sold in 1811.
  • HMS Janus (1844 ), a wooden sloop with a paddle wheel, which was launched in 1844 and was sold in 1856.
  • HMS Janus (1856 ), a wooden gunboat the clown class with screw drive, which launched from 1856. 1869 renamed YC 6 and used as a coal barge and sold in 1917.
  • HMS Janus (1895 ), a destroyer of the Janus class, launched in 1895 and was sold in 1912.
  • HMS Janus ( F53 ), a destroyer of the J- Class, which was launched in 1938 and sunk in 1944.
