HMS Monarch

Five ships of the Royal Navy have been named HMS Monarch:

  • The first HMS Monarch ( 1747 ) was a ship of the line 3rd class with 74 cannons, it was formerly the French Monarque, who had been captured in 1747 in the Second Battle of Cape Finisterre. On the first monarch in 1757 Admiral John Byng was executed. The ship was sold in 1760.
  • The second HMS Monarch ( 1765 ) was a ship of the line 3rd class with 74 cannons, which was launched in 1765. In 1797 it was the flagship of Vice Admiral Richard Onslow at the Battle of Camperdown. 1813 this ship was canceled.
  • The third HMS Monarch (1832 ) was a ship of the line 2nd class with 84 cannons, which was launched in 1832 and in 1866 was canceled.
  • The fourth HMS Monarch (1868 ) was a tower ironclad, which was launched in 1868 and in 1905 was canceled.
  • The fifth HMS Monarch (1911 ) was a battleship that was launched in 1911 and in 1925 was sunk as a target ship.
