HMS Nabob (D77)

The HMS Nabob ( D77 ) was an escort aircraft carriers of the Bogue class, who came in the Second World War in the Royal Navy for use. The ship was found in 1944 by a torpedo from service. 1951/52, it was converted to freighter at AG Weser from the aircraft carrier and was as Nabob times the largest ship in the Norddeutscher Lloyd, was sold in 1967 and scrapped in 1978.

Construction as an escort aircraft carriers of the Bogue class

The keel was laid in 1942 in Tacoma / Seattle named Edisto (CVE -41). He was one of 45 escort aircraft carriers of the Bogue class of the U.S. Navy, did not come for this but in service but was delivered to the Royal Navy under the Lend-Lease program.

The aircraft carrier of the Bogue class was 141.7 meters long and 21.2 meters wide. The width of the flight deck was 34 feet. The carrier had a displacement of around 15,400 ts in use. The USS Edisto was passed as one of 32 of these aircraft carrier to England and used as HMS Nabob ( D77 ) in Europe and in 1945 returned to the United States.

Deconstruction to the freighter (1951 /52)

Later it was sold in the Netherlands, the flight deck and the military installations removed and 1951 resold to the NDL in Bremen. The ship was rebuilt at the AG Weser to the freighter and ordered then as a 5- hatch ship - plus smaller post hatch in front of the aft deck house - with a length of 150 meters, a width of 21.2 meters, a survey of 7,900 GRT and a carrying capacity of 13,000 dwt were driven by a gear turbine with 6800 hp, which gave the ship a speed of 16 knots.

Use as a freighter in the NDL (1952-1967)

With a crew of 68 men and facilities for cadets and eight passengers, the Nabob was used in the NDL- subsidiary Roland - line nautical GmbH as a training ship. The first trip was in 1953 to Canada and then the nabob was used in the North American service. Until 1967, the Nabob was then used in various trades. This year, the sale and the Nabob was drove to scrapping in 1978 as Glory under Panama flag.
