HMS Pomone

Several warships of the Royal Navy have been named HMS Pomone to Pomona, a Roman goddess.

  • The first HMS Pomone was originally a French frigate of 44 guns, which was captured in 1794 by the Royal Navy and placed in service. She was placed out of service in 1802. Due to their excellent sailing qualities, it served as a model for the construction of several British frigates.
  • The second HMS Pomone was a frigate of 38 guns, which was launched in 1805 and 1811, was lost by shipwreck in the so-called " Needles ", Isle of Wight.
  • The third HMS Pomone was also a frigate with 38 cannons, originally the French Astrée that during the conquest of Mauritius fell into British hands in 1810. It was acquired by the Royal Navy in 1816 and scrapped.
  • The fourth HMS Pomone was a light cruiser Pelorous class, which was launched in 1897 and scrapped in 1922. Due to technical difficulties with the boilers it has already taken early from active service.
