HMS Renown (1774)

HMS Renown was a 50 -gun ship of the line fourth rank of the British Royal Navy. The ship was launched in 1774 and scrapped in 1794.

The Renown served during the American War of Independence in American waters. It has made them known to on August 13, 1778 the day before by a heavy storm entmastete 90 -gun ship of the line Languedoc, flagship of the French Admiral Charles Henri d' Estaing, near Newport (Rhode Iceland ) and attack from behind shelled. The Languedoc was saved only by the surprising appearance of a French squadron under Admiral Pierre André de Suffren. Admiral d' Estaing had planned an attack on Newport, but his fleet was so badly damaged by the storm, he had to refrain and instead sail to Boston to repair.
