Hniezdne

Hniezdne ( until 1927 slovak " gniazda " - to 1948 " Gňazdá "; Kniesen German, Polish gniazda, Hungarian Gnezda ) is a village in north-eastern Slovakia with 1468 inhabitants ( 31 December 2011). It is one of the oldest settlements in the northern Zips.

Geography

The village is located in the valley of the Poprad river at the mouth of Kamienka in this, on the northern slope of the mountains and close to the Pieniny Levočské. The center is located at an altitude of 539 m nm and is five kilometers from Stara Ľubovňa and 44 km from Poprad.

History

The first documentary mention of the place Knysen dated from the year 1286. Mainly German settlers were probably some years before on the left bank of Poprad down. 1412 Hniezdne was raised by the Hungarian king Sigismund of Luxembourg to a free royal town and pledged together with other Zipser cities in Poland. It was not until 1772, the area returned to Hungary and Hniezdne was now part of the province of 16 Zipser cities.

Attractions

In 1820, the Roman Catholic Church of St was. Dedicated to St. Bartholomew. It was built on the foundations of an older church and is baroque and classical furnishings.
