The KNM Fridtjof Nansen ( F310 ) is the lead ship of the same class frigate of the Royal Norwegian Navy.
The ship is named after Fridtjof Nansen, a Norwegian polar explorer and Nobel laureate.
Inserts
On 26 February 2009, the Norwegian Parliament decided on the current anti- piracy mission of the European Union off the Somali coast (Operation Atalanta ) to participate and to send in the Gulf of Aden for this purpose the Fridtjof Nansen. The ship arrived in area of operations in August 2009.
At present, the Fridtjof Nansen performs its mission without their on-board helicopter, since the delivery of the new NH -90 machines has been delayed. As a replacement for the missing helicopter the ship is seaworthy with two fast rigid inflatable boats.
