Hoag's Object

Hoag's Object is a non-typical galaxy of the type of a ring galaxy. The appearance of this object has not only interested amateur astronomers, but because of the unusual structure and professional astronomers. The object was discovered in 1950 by astronomer Art Hoag, who regarded it as a planetary nebula.

A nearly perfect circle of young blue hot stars surrounded the older yellow core of the ring galaxy, which is located about 540 million light- years away in the constellation of the Serpent.
