HOBAS is a manufacturer of centrifugally cast, fiberglass reinforced pipe systems made of unsaturated polyester (GF -UP or GRP) with diameters ranging from 150 mm to 3600 mm and wound pipes, vessels and equipment from 25 mm to over 4000 mm. The company was founded in Basel in 1957, in 1977 acquired the Wietersdorfer group the license for the pipe production in Austria and was involved from the year 1984 to 50% in HOBAS. 2011 HOBAS wholly owned by the Wietersdorfer group. There are several licensees developed by HOBAS spin coating technique.

2011 HOBAS pipe systems are manufactured at 16 locations worldwide. The HOBAS network consists of manufacturing and sales organizations in Europe, America, Asia and Australia, and international business partners.

Products

HOBAS produces circular and non- circular (non circular, NC) tubes made of GRP and wound pipes, tanks and equipment made of fiberglass. The products are used as drinking water, sewage, irrigation and drainage lines, as hydroelectric power plant, protection and ventilation ducts, they are in shaft sinking, used in flood protection and in many industrial applications. Can be laid the HOBAS thrown in an open trench, trenchless tunneling through or relining, above ground and in the water ( fresh or salt water).

Company History

In the 1950s, they were looking in the Basel piece dyeing for an alternative to traditional dyeing fabrics. Chipped and discolored wood cylinder around which the substances were wrapped, endangered the textiles. Developed a centrifugal process for glass fiber reinforced plastic (GRP), which was used up to now mainly in the automotive, aerospace and shipbuilding. Due to the corrosion and chemical resistance, the material was suitable for the optimal set requirements. It was quickly realized that the benefits can also be used in other applications, such as for the transport of water. Thus, the patent for CC-GRP Pipe Systems developed.

HOBAS spin process and chemical composition

The products consist mainly of unsaturated polyester resins ( UP), chopped glass fiber ( GF) and mineral reinforcing materials. In a rotating die, the tube is constructed from outside to inside. After all of the material was placed in the die, the rotational speed is increased, whereby the raw material is pressed at an acceleration of up to 75 g (75 times the acceleration due to gravity ) against the die wall, degassed, compacted and cured. This process makes it possible to make the wall thickness at high longitudinal compressive strength uniform throughout. The three-dimensional chemical compound of the resin prevents deformation ( thermoset ).

Environmental awareness

As part of an environmental study that HOBAS published in cooperation with the GSTT ( German Society for Trenchless Technology) in May 2011, CO2 emissions were compared for laying in open trenches with those that arise in propulsion. The results of the study show that for the Czajka I project the grave loose laying of sewage pipes represents a more climate-friendly solution as an open trench. Thanks to the choice of a grave wireless technology, a total of 376 734 tonnes of CO2, or the annual CO2 emissions of 104 430 cars can be saved. Were included emissions from production, transportation, transfer ( tunneling or open wiring) and transport ( diversions, traffic jams ).
