Hobo (German magazine)

The Hobo was a Berlin city magazine of the 1970s.

Emerged was the hobo from the Per -Jörg Meschkat ( † 14 December 1989), written and published in self-work district sheet Kreuzberg night lantern. On a visit to London Meschkat learned the local city magazine Time Out and found out that there were no comparable magazine in West Berlin, the content covered the entire city.

The end of 1971 Meschkat changed the concept of Kreuzberg night lantern comprehensive, so that from the hitherto solely on the Kreuzberg district oriented magazine related to a whole magazine was West Berlin; at the same time the name was changed to Hobo, according to the American name " Hobo" for migrant workers. This was the hobo before the tip almost the same time founded the first German city magazine.

The contents of the Hobo was composed mainly composed of event announcements, culture and cinema, concert announcements and tips on restaurants and pubs. Outstanding reputation enjoyed the magazine for their classified part, in particular the personals.

Initially designed in trendy bars and cinemas free of charge, appearing in the two- week rotation Hobo was soon sold at a price of 50 cents. The magazine was very successful, so that per- Jörg Meschkat had the editors constantly enlarge. From the original small A5 format was changed to A4, the first printed in black and white gave way to color printing envelopes. With increasing success only editorial offices in Friedrichstrasse, were then based on the Kurfürstendamm.

As Meschkat the Hobo began to conduct increasingly seeking entrepreneurial point of view, the work environment deteriorated in the newsroom, including through measures such as the introduction of clocks. In 1977, the employees were on strike and closed were subsequently dismissed from Meschkat. The loss of well-established editors, who founded it soon with the Zitty own city magazine, conducted a few weeks later for the permanent cessation of the first German city magazine.
