Hobyo (also Hobya Obbia or written ) is a town in Somalia, with about 12,000 inhabitants. It lies on the Indian Ocean in the Mudug region, which is part of the de facto autonomous Puntland.

History

The name of Hobyo means " place where there is water"; the place is supplied by wells with sufficient water, which is a rarity in this region of the world. For this reason, Hobyo was from the 7th century to the intermediate station for caravans and sailors and for Muslims on the pilgrimage to Mecca. By sea and land transport rose to the commercial center and placed here soon Opone (today Hafun ) in the shade. The people in and around Hobyo built on millet and beans, and kept cattle; Products from livestock, raisins and scented woods were exported, rice, clothing, among other things however, imported. Dealers who were exotic products could not acquire textiles, precious metals and pearls in Hobyo. The city became the commercial center of the Ajuran State and from 1878 the center of the Majerteen Sultanate.

Sultan Yusuf Ali Kenaadiid imputed in 1885 first German protection, In 1888 an Italian protectorate. After its integration into the colony of Italian Somaliland in 1926 Hobyo lost its importance as the trade routes shifted to the further south Mogadishu. Many residents left in the wake of the city and moved to Mogadishu.

August 16, 2006 Hobyo was occupied by the Union of Islamic Courts.

On November 18, 2008 it was announced that Somali pirates have gone after the hijacking of the supertanker Sirius Star near Hobyo at anchor. In other reports, however, the waters were called before the city Harardheere.
